What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is about winning a position in a list of links, so the user clicks through to you. Answer Engine Optimization is about becoming the source an AI assistant reads, summarises and credits when it writes an answer. The user may never see a list of links at all.

The two are not rivals. An answer engine still has to find your page, still has to be able to crawl it, and still weighs how authoritative your site is. Solid SEO fundamentals are the entry ticket. AEO is what you add on top: writing so that a machine can lift a clean, correct, attributable answer out of your page without guessing.

Why this matters now

A growing share of searches never reach a website. The user asks a question, reads the generated answer, and moves on. For purely informational queries that means fewer clicks. None of these need a rebuild. Most are a day's work on an existing site.

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph. If a page is titled "How much does a website cost in India?", the price range belongs in the opening lines, not after 800 words of preamble. Answer engines extract from the top.
  • Write one page per real question. Use the phrasing your customers actually type or say. One clear question, one clear page, beats a single sprawling page covering ten topics.
  • Add structured data. FAQPage, Article, Organization and LocalBusiness schema make your meaning machine-readable, so an engine can extract facts confidently and attribute them to you.
  • Be specific and verifiable. Numbers, dates, ranges and named examples get quoted. Vague marketing language does not. "₹15,000–₹50,000 for a 4–6 page site" is citable; "affordable pricing" is not.
  • Keep the page fast and crawlable. If a crawler cannot render your content, or your key text only appears after a heavy script runs, you are invisible to the answer. Check your robots rules too.
  • Build mentions where the models already look. Directories, industry publications, review sites, and genuine press. Answer engines lean on sources they already trust, and consistent brand mentions across them build that trust.
  • Keep it current. Put the year in the content where it matters, and update it. A page that says "in 2026" and is accurate will beat an undated page that is merely correct.
How to measure it

AEO does not have a clean rank-tracking dashboard yet. The practical approach is to ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, and record whether you are named. Do it monthly, keep a simple sheet, and watch the direction of travel. Alongside that, watch referral traffic from AI assistants in your analytics, and treat a rise in branded search as a good sign that people are hearing your name inside an answer and then looking you up.
